“GEMS: Girl Power!”
Bible Text: II Kings 5:1-19a |
In our Bible reading today we hear the story of Naaman who was healed from leprosy. This is a
familiar story as it tells us about Naaman, a powerful man in the Syrian army, who had leprosy.
He went to see Elisha, the prophet of the LORD, who told him to bathe seven times in the
Jordan River. At first Naaman scoffed at this suggestion. Why should he, a powerful man in the
Syrian army, go down and bathe in a dirty, muddy river in Israel? However, his servants
persuade him to do what Elisha tells him to do. “It’s an easy thing to do. Just do it!” So when
Naaman does it, he finds that he is cured. His skin is restored and he comes to faith. In II Kings
5:15 he says, “Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel.”
Naaman receives God’s grace and comes to have faith in God and it all begins when a young girl
speaks up. Her words show the power of God at work in her. Today is GEMS Sunday and we will
celebrate this ministry to young girls who are everywhere meeting the Savior!
